Both devices need Wi-Fi turned on and Local Network permission granted (iOS asks on first launch; you can re-enable it in Settings → Camera Monitor). Being on the same network is the easy case, but it is not required — devices near each other link up directly, peer to peer. If a network blocks that link between its clients — common in hotels and cafés — disconnect both devices from that network while leaving Wi-Fi switched on: the direct link needs the Wi-Fi radio, not the router.
The stream pauses when the camera app goes to the background — iOS suspends it. The monitor dims the last frame and reconnects on its own once you bring the camera app back to the foreground.
The live feed is compressed video so it can travel across the network instantly. Photos you take are captured at full sensor resolution and are not affected by the stream quality.
In the photo library of the device that is filming — including photos triggered remotely from the monitor.
48 MP capture is only available on the physical wide camera, which cannot switch lenses. Choose 12 or 24 MP in the camera settings to get the full 0.5×/1×/2×/3× range back.
